Wooden Wick Care

A little care makes every light more enjoyable. Follow your candle’s label first, and use this guide for everyday wooden-wick care.

Wooden wick won’t stay lit?

Extinguish the candle and let the wax cool completely. Gently remove the loose, charred edge of the wick and clear away every clipping before relighting. Keep a short, exposed edge of wood above the wax; do not cut into fresh wood or trim the wick flush with the wax. Light across the wick’s width, giving the wood time to catch.

If the wick is buried, damaged, or keeps going out, stop and contact us before trying again. Do not dig into the candle, pour out hot wax, add oil, or use another wick to force it to burn.

The first burn

Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts and anything that can catch fire. Allow time for the melted wax to spread toward the sides, but never exceed the burn time printed on your label. Do not keep burning just to force a full melt pool. Let the candle cool fully before its next use.

Trim before each light

With the candle cool and the wax firm, remove only the brittle, blackened wick tip using a wick trimmer. Follow any trim length on your candle’s label. Leave the sound wood intact and remove all debris from the wax.

Flame height, soot and drafts

A wooden wick can have a lower flame than a cotton wick. Look for a steady flame rather than a tall one. If the flame becomes unusually tall, flickers strongly, or produces visible smoke or soot, extinguish it. Once cool, remove loose char and check for drafts before relighting. Keep candles away from fans, vents and open windows. If smoking or an unstable flame continues, stop using the candle and contact us.

Tunneling

A deep ring of unmelted wax can develop when burns are repeatedly too short. On future burns, give the wax time to melt outward within the label’s burn-time limit. A little wax at the edge is not a reason to overburn. Never use foil tents, an oven, a microwave, or an added flame to repair tunneling. If the wick becomes buried or the candle burns unevenly, stop and contact us.

When not to use your candle

Never leave a burning candle unattended or burn it while sleeping. Keep it out of reach of children and pets and away from flammable materials. Do not burn a candle with a cracked or damaged vessel, an off-center wick that heats the vessel unevenly, or debris in the wax. Do not move or touch a hot candle, and never use water to extinguish it.

Stop at the remaining-wax level specified on your label; if none is stated, discontinue use when about 1/2 inch of wax remains. Never burn down to the base. Extinguish immediately if the vessel overheats, cracks, or the flame becomes unsafe. Let everything cool before handling.
